Description

This Traditional Irish Soda Bread is a simple, hearty, and rustic loaf made with just a few basic ingredients—no yeast required. The reaction between baking soda and buttermilk gives it a perfect rise, resulting in a golden crust and a dense yet tender crumb. Whether served warm with butter, alongside a hearty stew, or toasted with jam, this classic Irish bread is a must-try for any home baker.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat and Prepare

    • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly flour a cast-iron skillet.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients

    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add the Buttermilk

    • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
    • Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Shape the Dough

    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
    • Shape it into a round loaf and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.
  • Score and Bake

    • Using a sharp knife, score a deep cross on top of the loaf to help it expand while baking.
    • Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Cool and Serve

    • Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
    • Serve warm with butter, jam, or alongside a bowl of stew.

Notes

  • If buttermilk is unavailable, substitute with milk and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar per cup.
  • For a whole-wheat version, replace half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
  • To check for doneness, insert a toothpick in the center—if it comes out clean, the bread is ready.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
