Description

Looking for the ultimate snack that combines flaky pastry, juicy sausage, and the rich, caramelized flavor of French onions? Savory French Onion Sausage Rolls are your answer! These rolls are perfect for parties, cozy afternoons, or even as a main dish when paired with a fresh salad. With minimal effort, you’ll create a dish that’s both elegant and comforting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground sausage (pork or beef)
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 package puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Caramelized Onions:
    • Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
    • Stir in Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Set aside to cool.
  • Combine the Sausage Filling:
    • In a large mixing bowl, mix the ground sausage with the cooled caramelized onions until well combined.
  • Roll Out the Pastry:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut into rectangles about 6 inches wide.
  • Assemble the Sausage Rolls:
    • Divide the sausage mixture evenly along the length of each pastry rectangle.
    • Roll the pastry tightly around the filling, pressing to seal the edges. Place seam-side down on the baking sheet.
  • Add the Egg Wash and Toppings:
    • Brush the tops of the rolls with beaten egg. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top for added crunch and flavor, if desired.
  • Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed, and the filling is cooked through.
  • Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the rolls to cool slightly before slicing them into smaller portions if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

    • Customizing the Filling: You can add grated cheese, chopped herbs, or even chili flakes to the sausage mixture for added flavor.
    • Freezing Option: Assemble the rolls and freeze before baking. Bake from frozen, adding an extra 5-7 minutes to the cooking time.
    • Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven to maintain crispness.
