Description

The Monte Cristo sandwich is a classic favorite that combines the best of sweet and savory. With layers of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese nestled between slices of golden, pan-fried bread, this dish is finished with a dusting of powdered sugar and a side of jam. It’s the perfect comfort food for brunch, lunch, or dinner!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices of white or brioche bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 4 slices of turkey
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Raspberry or strawberry jam (for dipping)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Assemble the Sandwiches
    • Lay out the bread slices. Spread a thin layer of mustard or mayo on one side of each slice if desired.
    • Add one slice of Swiss cheese, followed by 1–2 slices of ham and turkey, and top with another slice of cheese.
    • Place the second slice of bread on top to form a sandwich.
  • Prepare the Batter
    • In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and flour until smooth. Add a pinch of salt and pepper for seasoning.
  • Dip the Sandwiches
    • Dip each sandwich into the batter, coating both sides evenly. Let any excess batter drip off.
  • Cook the Sandwiches
    • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter.
    • Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese has melted. Add more butter as needed for additional sandwiches.
  • Serve
    • Transfer the sandwiches to a plate. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with a side of raspberry or strawberry jam for dipping.

Notes

    • Bread Choice: Use sturdy bread like brioche or challah to prevent the sandwich from falling apart.
    • Customizable Fillings: Swap out the ham and turkey for roast beef or smoked chicken for a twist.
    • Cooking Tip: Keep the heat at medium to ensure the bread doesn’t burn while the cheese melts.
    • Make Ahead: You can assemble the sandwiches a few hours in advance and cook them just before serving.
    • Leftovers: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven to restore the crispiness.
