Description

German Frikadellen are tender, savory meat patties seasoned with onion, garlic, and parsley. These flavorful “German hamburgers” are pan-fried to golden perfection and served as a hearty main dish. Perfect for weeknight dinners or a taste of traditional German cuisine at home, Frikadellen are a must-try recipe for any food lover.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 250 g (8.8 oz) ground beef
  • 250 g (8.8 oz) ground pork
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • Cooking oil (for frying)

Instructions

  • Mix the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, mustard, parsley, salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Mix gently until evenly combined.
  • Shape the Patties: Divide the mixture into six equal portions. Shape each into a round or oval patty about ¾ inch thick.
  • Heat the Pan: Heat a skillet over medium heat with enough cooking oil to cover the bottom.
  • Cook the Patties: Place the patties in the skillet, ensuring not to overcrowd. Cook each side for 5-7 minutes until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F/71°C).
  • Drain and Serve: Transfer the cooked Frikadellen to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve warm with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Meat Ratio: A mix of ground beef and pork provides the best flavor and texture.
  • Texture Tip: Avoid overmixing the ingredients to keep the patties tender.
  • Alternative Cooking Method: For a healthier option, bake the patties at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Serving Suggestions: Pair with potato salad, sauerkraut, or crusty bread for a complete meal.
