Method

Step-by-Step Instructions for Vampire Bread
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 packet of active dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Gradually pour in 1 cup of warm water, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. After kneading, shape the dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl, covering it with a clean towel. Set in a warm area for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  3. Once risen, punch down the dough, divide into two equal portions, and add black food coloring to one and red to the other, kneading until colors are vibrant.
  4. Roll out each colored dough into rectangles about ½ inch thick. Layer the red on top of the black dough and roll them together, twisting to form a loaf shape.
  5. Place the shaped loaf in a greased pan, cover with a towel, and let rise for 30 minutes in a warm spot.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  7. Allow to cool for 5 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
