Step-by-Step Instructions for Vampire Bread
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 packet of active dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Gradually pour in 1 cup of warm water, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- After kneading, shape the dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl, covering it with a clean towel. Set in a warm area for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough, divide into two equal portions, and add black food coloring to one and red to the other, kneading until colors are vibrant.
- Roll out each colored dough into rectangles about ½ inch thick. Layer the red on top of the black dough and roll them together, twisting to form a loaf shape.
- Place the shaped loaf in a greased pan, cover with a towel, and let rise for 30 minutes in a warm spot.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Allow to cool for 5 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes
Use gel food coloring for vibrant swirls without affecting dough consistency. Make sure to cover the dough while rising to avoid dryness.
