Ingredients

For the Pastry
  • 2 sheets Puff Pastry Substitute with crescent roll dough if necessary.
For the Cream Cheese Filling
  • 8 ounces Cream Cheese Room temperature; can substitute with dairy-free cream cheese.
  • 1/4 cup White Sugar Powdered sugar can be used for a smoother texture.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2 drops Red Food Coloring Optional; can be replaced with a spoonful of strawberry jam.
For the Topping
  • 1 cup Diced Strawberries Frozen strawberries must be thawed and drained.
  • 1 large Egg For egg wash.
  • 1 tablespoon Cold Water For mixing with the egg.

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • parchment paper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • heart-shaped cutter
  • Pastry Brush

Method

Preparation
  1. Thaw two sheets of puff pastry at room temperature for 30-60 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, white sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth, about 2-3 minutes. Add red food coloring and fold in half of the diced strawberries.
  3. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and cut out heart shapes with a cutter. Lightly press down the edges to form a rim.
  4. Fill each heart with 1-2 tablespoons of cream cheese filling and top with remaining diced strawberries.
  5. Whisk together one egg and cold water to create an egg wash. Brush the edges of each pastry heart with the mixture.
  6. Bake the danishes on the prepared baking sheet for 12-15 minutes or until golden-brown. Rotate the baking sheet halfway through for even browning.
  7. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Optionally dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with glaze.
