Preparation Steps
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease the baking dish with butter.
- Peel and slice sweet potatoes into thin rounds about ⅛ inch thick and layer them in the baking dish.
- Melt butter in a saucepan, then whisk in brown sugar, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
- Pour the brown sugar sauce evenly over the layered sweet potatoes.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 35 minutes.
- After 35 minutes, remove foil and bake uncovered for an additional 20-25 minutes until the top is golden and potatoes are tender.
- If using, sprinkle marshmallows on top during the last 5 minutes of baking.
- Let cool slightly before serving, adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or fresh herbs for garnish if desired.
