Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease the baking dish with butter.
  2. Peel and slice sweet potatoes into thin rounds about ⅛ inch thick and layer them in the baking dish.
  3. Melt butter in a saucepan, then whisk in brown sugar, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the brown sugar sauce evenly over the layered sweet potatoes.
  5. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 35 minutes.
  6. After 35 minutes, remove foil and bake uncovered for an additional 20-25 minutes until the top is golden and potatoes are tender.
  7. If using, sprinkle marshmallows on top during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving, adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or fresh herbs for garnish if desired.
