Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers, about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until onions are translucent.
  3. Stir in ground beef, breaking it apart. Cook for about 5-6 minutes until the meat is browned.
  4. Reduce heat to medium and stir in tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, cider vinegar, chili powder, salt, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low. Allow to cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Toast hamburger buns in a separate pan over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Place a slice of cheddar cheese on each toasted bun and divide the sloppy joe mixture evenly among the buns.
