Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 13×9 inch baking pan.
  2. Cut day-old French bread into 1-inch cubes and spread them on a large baking sheet.
  3. In a skillet, crumble and cook the Italian sausage over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes.
  4. Sauté diced onion in olive oil for 3-5 minutes until soft, then add honey crisp apples and sage.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, salt, nutmeg, sage, and pepper.
  6. Layer half of the toasted bread cubes in the baking pan, followed by half of the sausage and apple mixture.
  7. Pour the custard mixture over the layered ingredients and toss to coat.
  8. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese on top and let sit for 5 minutes.
  9. Bake for 50-60 minutes until golden brown and a knife inserted comes out clean.
