Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Mushroom Gravy:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup mushrooms sliced
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh parsley chopped (for garnish)

Method

Prepare the Steaks:
  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, chopped onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until well combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.
Cook the Steaks:
  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through.
  3. Remove from skillet and set aside.
Make the Gravy:
  1. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced mushrooms and onions; sauté for 4-5 minutes until softened.
  3. Sprinkle in flour, stirring constantly, and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Gradually pour in beef broth, whisking to avoid lumps.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, black pepper, and salt. Stir and simmer until thickened, about 3-4 minutes.
Combine and Serve:
  1. Return Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them.
  2. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  3. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Notes

  • Meat Variation: You can use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef for a lighter version.
  • Gravy Enhancements: Add a splash of cream for a creamier gravy, or a dash of red wine for depth.
  • Make Ahead: The patties and gravy can be prepared ahead and reheated.
  • Serving Suggestion: Pair with buttered noodles or roasted potatoes for a complete meal.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days; reheat gently on the stovetop.
