Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into 1-inch meatballs.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add oil. Sear meatballs in a single layer for 6-8 minutes until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add sliced onions, salt, and sugar. Cook on medium-low for 15-20 minutes until deep golden brown.
  4. Pour beef broth into the skillet, bring to simmer for about 5 minutes, scraping up bits from the bottom.
  5. Return meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle cheese over meatballs, cover, and let melt for 3-5 minutes on low heat.
  7. Serve meatballs and sauce on plates with crusty bread, mashed potatoes, or salad.
