Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread white or brioche
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 4 slices of turkey or chicken
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard optional
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Raspberry or strawberry jam for serving

Method

Assemble the Sandwiches:
  1. Lay out 4 slices of bread.
  2. On each slice, layer 1 piece of Swiss cheese, 1 slice of ham, 1 slice of turkey or chicken, and another slice of Swiss cheese.
  3. Top with the remaining 4 slices of bread to create 4 sandwiches.
Prepare the Egg Mixture:
  1. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and Dijon mustard until well combined.
Dip the Sandwiches:
  1. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
  2. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are evenly coated.
Cook the Sandwiches:
  1. Place the dipped sandwiches on the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  2. If cooking in batches, add the remaining tablespoon of butter for the next batch.
Finish with Sweetness:
  1. Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and place them on a serving plate.
  2. Dust with powdered sugar for a touch of sweetness.
Serve:
  1. Slice the sandwiches in half and serve warm with raspberry or strawberry jam on the side for dipping.

Notes

    • Bread Choices: Brioche or white bread works best for its softness, but sourdough or multigrain can add a unique twist.
    • Make It Your Own: Substitute meats with your favorites like roast beef or smoked chicken.
    • Storage Tips: Wrap leftover sandwiches in foil and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven at 350°F until warm.
    • Jam Alternatives: Use honey, maple syrup, or any fruit preserve if you don’t have raspberry or strawberry jam.
