Ingredients
  

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Buttermilk

Method
 

  1. Preheat and Prepare
  2. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly flour a cast-iron skillet.
  4. Mix the Dry Ingredients
  5. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  6. Add the Buttermilk
  7. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
  8. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  9. Shape the Dough
  10. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
  11. Shape it into a round loaf and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.
  12. Score and Bake
  13. Using a sharp knife, score a deep cross on top of the loaf to help it expand while baking.
  14. Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  15. Cool and Serve
  16. Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
  17. Serve warm with butter, jam, or alongside a bowl of stew.

Notes

  • If buttermilk is unavailable, substitute with milk and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar per cup.
  • For a whole-wheat version, replace half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
  • To check for doneness, insert a toothpick in the center—if it comes out clean, the bread is ready.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
