Preheat and Prepare
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly flour a cast-iron skillet.
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
Add the Buttermilk
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Shape the Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
Shape it into a round loaf and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.
Score and Bake
Using a sharp knife, score a deep cross on top of the loaf to help it expand while baking.
Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cool and Serve
Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
Serve warm with butter, jam, or alongside a bowl of stew.
