Ingredients

  • 2 cups chopped walnuts or pistachios
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 package 16 ounces phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
  2. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it lightly with melted butter. Place another sheet on top and brush with more butter. Repeat this process until you have 5 layers.
  3. Sprinkle a thin line of the nut mixture along one edge of the phyllo dough. Roll the dough tightly over the nuts to form a log. Place the rolled baklava seam-side down on a greased baking sheet.
  4. Repeat the process with the remaining phyllo dough and nut mixture until all are rolled and placed on the baking sheet.
  5. Using a sharp knife, cut each roll into 2-inch pieces. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  6. While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  7. Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the rolls. Allow to cool completely before serving.
